Welcome to Berklee!
All entering students must take an audition upon arriving at Berklee.
This audition is for placement into lessons, ensembles and labs.
For the audition, make sure that you have a prepared piece whether it be jazz, classical, pop or whatever style you choose to play for the audition. If you are using a play-along, make sure that you have it with you as none will be provided.

You will be asked to play from the reading examples that have been provided you upon your arrival to Berklee. You will also be given some short examples to sight read.

You will be asked questions regarding your knowledge of scales, including major, natural minor, jazz melodic minor and harmonic minor. You will be asked about scale modes from the above scales.

You will be asked to perform arpeggios including triads and 7th chord arpeggios. Included will be major, minor, diminished and augmented triads. The 7th chord arpeggios will include major 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th (b5), dominant 7th, diminished 7th, augmented 7th, major 6th and minor 6th. It is not mandatory that you know all of this, it only helps us to place you. Obviously, the more you know, the better your audition score and the higher the level of the ensemble you will be placed into.

Please make sure that you arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time so that you may prepare your instrument for the audition and prepare yourself mentally. PLEASE have your instrument out and ready to play.
Lastly, GOOD LUCK!
