A World of Styles Study Classical, Jazz and Latin styles with leading flutists in their fields. You can develop your technique and musicianship in virtually any style of flute playing. A World of Ensembles Flutists at Berklee are playing all the time, no matter what their major! Here are some groups you can perform in:
Limitless opportunities to record original film and composition scores Participate in numerous local community, theater and university orchestras. A World of Performing Outside Berklee Our flute students have been selected for the prestigious Henry Mancini Institute in LA. They have won National Flute Association Jazz Competitions and have performed at national IAJE conventions. They often play with local orchestras and for theater shows. They play Classical, Latin, Jazz and Pop music at hospitals and community and senior centers all over the Boston area through our unique Music Therapy Performance Outreach Project. Alumni can be heard in "The Lion King" on Broadway, and teach in leading music schools around the world. Some go on to become music therapists, some are music educators, and others are leaders in the music business field. |
A World of Expertise: Our Flute Faculty Fernando Brandao, Assistant Professor at Berklee, is music director, composer and arranger of Brasileirinho and a member of Manga Rosa and Bambule. He has made studio recordings in Brazil and the United States on Narada and Glider Records. He is a winner of national competitions in Brazil and the Pappoutsakis Flute Competition in Boston. Matt Marvuglio is Dean of Professional Performance at Berklee. He is the author of "Modal Etudes for the Flute" and gives jazz clinics and performances worldwide. His solo CD, "Why Cry", with Barry Smith and Ed Saindon, has received critical acclaim. Wendy Rolfe is Professor of Flute at Berklee. One of the USA's leading performers on historical flutes, she performs, records and tours with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque and New York's Concert Royal. She gives concerts and master classes in Brazil, and has also toured the USA with a Solo Recitalist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Mia Olson is a Professor in the Woodwind Department at Berklee College of Music, teaching private flute lessons, the Jazz Flute Lab, basic keyboard classes, and Yoga For Musicians classes. She performs and teaches various styles of music including jazz, classical, Latin, Indian, rock, and other styles of music from around the world. Mia earned a B.M. degree in classical flute performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Diploma in jazz flute performance from Berklee College of Music, and a M.M. degree in contemporary improvisation from New England Conservatory of Music. |
